JULY 2025 NEWSLETTER
Here is our sixth newsletter for 2025.
Winter and travel season is well upon us, so class sizes are smaller than usual as coughs and colds etc kick in,  or people go away for well deserved holidays. If you do have a respiratory disease, please wait till the symptoms have gone before resuming class, to avoid spreading it to others.

2025 Regular Socials
Socials are an integral part of our line dance organisation. They provide an opportunity for our dancers to test out their knowledge and skills, check out their options to stretch themselves in a higher level, and meet other members of our community from different regional areas.
The program is made up from requests from those attending. There have been an increase in the new members of our community attending the socials, which is wonderful. We have adjusted the programme to accommodate this with an increased number of easy level dances on the program. We are discontinuing writing up the programme on a white board, to enable us to be more flexible in responding to the floor level.
The remaining social dates for this year are as follows:
  • Sunday 17th August 1:30pm to 5:00pm
  • Sunday 21st September 1:30pm to 5:00pm
  • Sunday 2nd November 1:30pm to 5:00pm
  • Sunday 30th November 1:30pm to 5:00pm - Christmas Theme
The Address is: West Croydon and Kilkenny RSL, 19 Rosetta St, West Croydon.
Dancing starts at 1.30pm and concludes at 5pm at a cost of $15 (cash only). The program is run by request, and everyone gets a request form when they enter, to nominate 5 dances they would like to do. We try to ensure that you get at least one of those, but we only do about 5 level 6+ dances during the session, so don't just ask for really hard ones (or lots of unusual ones), or you could miss out altogether.
We have decided not to offer meals beforehand this year, as they were not being well supported and it was not economical for the caterers. Instead, we will return to the format we were using long before Covid-19, with a break about half way through, where we share a combined afternoon tea for 20 minutes. Please bring a small plate of food to share with your fellow dancers. Also bring a coffee cup if you wish to take advantage of the free tea and coffee provided. We will have minimal fridge space, and a pie warmer, but no oven, so please don’t bring food that needs cooking or defrosting. We feel this is a better way to assist people to mix and chat. Doors will open 30 minutes before the starting time.
CLASS CHANGES - CHALLENGE CLASS
South Plympton Tuesday Night Class will resume on 5th August from 7.30pm-9.30pm at the Vermont Uniting Church (Cnr New St & Cross Rd). The class will be called the "Challenge" class. The class will not be doing any of the dances from the Easy, Mainstream or Crossover programmes, and material will be selected by Peter on a week by week basis, with revision/request night when the majority of dancers want it. Any dances from LDSA history, or web site searches can be requested by attendees for consideration (no guarantees) in the programme (once they have been prepped and approved by Peter).
The programme will be made up of classics from the past Intermediate and Advanced classes, past dances avoided (not taught) because of their difficulty, and new current dances of sufficient complexity to justify being called "Challenge" material.
This class will run for a trial 5 week period, when the financial viability over the 5 weeks will be assessed. The cost will be $20 per session, to allow for the small number of people that are looking for such a challenge, and the amount of work required to prepare the material. Breaks will be short, as the dance material is time intensive.
You do not need to be dancing with LDSA already to attend, but knowledge of our terminology will be advantageous as it will be used to reduce the teach time of the material. Peter will not be slowing the teaching down to accommodate dancers that are not of a strong level 6 (Crossover) experience.
This will be a "line dancing" class, not a "line dance" class. You will learn proper body mechanics and techniques (if you pay attention) to make you a competent line dancer, not just a person with a good memory that can approximately execute some line dances.
If you get vertigo, or have physical limitations that stop you from spinning or twisting, then you may find this class difficult to participate in. Peter will give low turn, low impact options where possible, but turns, timing and speed complexities are part of the appeal of this level and cannot be avoided.
Dances learned at this level can be requested at LDSA socials, but will not be walked through (it takes too long, and encourages people that have insufficient experience to give it a go, which will get in your way). There will be limited dance repetition from week to week, so regular attendance is encouraged, as there will be minimal opportunity to "catch up" material that has been missed.
LDSA Travel - Mediterranean Cruise 2027
Our 2027 offering for a Mediterranean Cruise is still available. We do have a single lady in need of a cabin mate, should you be interested in joining us without a partner.
We are very comfortable with choosing Viking as our cruise provider again. Having experienced cruising with P&O, Hurtigruten, Royal Caribbean and Viking, we are convinced the quality of staff, tours and food is second to none of the others. All meals (even specialist), and non spirits drinks with meals are included, as is internet access, tours, gratuities and on board activities. We are also being given special on board credit as part of our group package that can go towards optional tours (Pompeii maybe) or spirits.
Our opinion is that if you are going to take the time and money to travel so far away, it is worth maximising the experience. To that end we are offering additional "bolt ons" both before and after the cruise to explore Greece, Rome and Malta. These are optional, and you can just pay for and go on the cruise and return home if you wish.
You can be assured that we are very experienced travellers, and can take the hassle out of organising all the component parts that make up a dream holiday without issues that you have to deal with. We understand it is not a cheap holiday, but the inclusions and assurances of quality make it very good value for money.
2027 - Greece, the Adriatic Sea, Italy and Malta (August)
After optionally spending 5 days touring Greece, we will embark on a Viking Coastal Cruise (not Mid Ocean) in Athens on the 7th August. The cruise will conclude in Rome 15 days later. After a couple of days in Rome we will optionally fly to the island of Malta for 7 days before returning home. Full itineraries and application forms are available from your instructors if you ask them, or email Peter and he will send you one via email.
OUR LINE DANCE MISSION
Since the inauguration of our organisation "Line Dancers of South Australia" (LDSA) in 1993, we have endeavored to provide a high quality product for a reasonable and consistent cost. We have provided an opportunity for people with no dance experience at all, to become competent, well balanced and proficient line dancers.
There are two types of line dance offerings out there. There are "Line Dance Classes" and there are "Line Dancing" Classes. There is a big difference in the product, and a very subtle difference in the name.
  • Line Dance Classes - At these classes, you get to attempt many dances in a session, where the teaching is "Monkey See, Monkey Do". Visual learning is assumed; correctness of steps, technique, styling, body mechanics and physical safety are mostly ignored.
  • Line Dancing Classes - At these classes you only get a few dances in a session, but each is carefully taught, with attention to accuracy and passing on an understanding of the building blocks used, to allow reuse of that knowledge in future classes, with future choreography.
There are also two types of structures of those classes.
  • All Levels Together Classes - Apart from a possible limited time (and content) beginners class, All levels of material are presented in a mixed programme. This means lesser experienced dancers struggle to understand the fundamental steps to mix it with the experienced dancers. Only the very persistent, or very skilled dancers will survive in this environment after the initial creation of the class.
  • Split Level Classes - Class content is limited to a specific level of difficulty, to enable attendees to gain a competency with the building blocks associated with that level, before venturing on to the next level. This allows people to progress at their own speed, or stay at a level that suits their ability, and desired stress levels.
LDSA provides "Split Level Line Dancing Classes" throughout South Australia. It is that reason that we are still running after 32 years of continuous teaching, The organisational model we set up in 1993 has allowed us to survive the passing of hundreds of other organisations and teachers that almost always offer "All Levels Together Line Dance Classes".
The life cycle of a "All Levels Together Line Dance Classes" is as follows.
  • Stage 1 - Start - Everyone starts at the same level of experience, the instructor knows a little more than the rest of the attendees. All is great, lots of people and enthusiasm.
  • Stage 2 - Expand - Word get around and the class grows quickly till it gets a little crowded and people cant see the teacher easily and they start to rely on watching the dancers around them for information.
  • Stage 3 - Lift Level - The original core group become more experienced and the class level lifts. New people start to drop off, as they cannot cope with the harder material, and don't know the older dances that are being rushed through because "every one knows this one".
  • Stage 4 - Shrink Size - The class is still big, but started to reduce in size due to attrition of the original core group, and very few new dancers surviving their first couple of weeks.
  • Stage 5 - Recruit Others - The class is struggling in size, short term beginners classes are not working because there isn't enough decent material to keep them stimulated and they don't seem to learn quick enough. Scouts / Spies are sent out to other nearby classes to surreptitiously gather other experienced dancers to bolster the class numbers.
  • Stage 6 - Stagnate - Most of the class attendees dance in multiple classes trying to keep them all active, everyone is a scout. When a dancer retires, multiple classes that they attend suffer. Nearby classes are closing and their drifters just keep things going... for now.
  • Stage 7 - Death - The class closes due to retirement, lack of motivation or injury of the instructor, or the rent increase means that costs are not being covered and it becomes not viable to continue as numbers are too low.
Unfortunately over time, we have had quite a number of recruiters embedded in our classes. Our customers are well trained and after a few years, better than any others out there. Ripe pickings for external classes that are in the later life cycle stages and struggling to survive. These recruiters pick off the top dancers and lure them away with promises of lots of dancing and no beginners to bother them, or cheaper classes (that don't have the professional overheads that we do, such as insurance, music licensing and support staff). The other classes rely on us to keep them operating.
This unfortunately causes long term problems in our organisation. Small high level classes are not financially viable and never have been. We provide them to give our lower level dancers something to aspire to, and a place for the dancers that want a challenge to go to. They are provided as a service to the line dance community as a whole. They are also a place for us to recruit new instructors to replace or enhance the current generation of instructors. An instructor needs to be dancing a level higher than they are teaching to be competent and respected.
If we have insufficient dancers at the top level to keep those classes alive, we too will eventually close, and all external classes will eventually be gone, as there will be nowhere for the others to recruit from, and no-one to train the next crop of instructors.
If someone approaches you about an external class, it is your decision what you do, but please appreciate the effort that we have gone to, to get you to the point that someone else is interested in your patronage.
